Old School

I recently got a box full of goodies from my mom the other day. And by goodies I mean my books from when I was a kid. When I got them I could have spent hours just flipping through them and reading them. And to my utter delight, Ellie loves every single book that came out of that box. She has spent hours with Rob and I reading them over and over.

Some of my favorites from the box:
I will always love Shel Silverstein. I remember my Mom taking me to the library to check out the tape for this book. Shel himself reads the poems and it is hilarious. Every time I read this book I hear his voice.

These books are so awesome! I especially love Socks for Supper. I seriously love reading these to my kids.

Ellie reading But No Elephants

I think Ellie's favorites are the Sesame Street books. Did anyone else have those? I have lots of them but I would love to find all of them that were published so I can add them to my collection. Ellie chooses a Sesame Street book for a bedtime story at least 5 nights a week.

We were also at my Grandma and Grandpa Maxwell's a while ago and Ellie found the toy closet. It was so fun to see her playing with all the toys that I grew up playing with on Sunday afternoons when we would visit.

Didn't everyone have a ViewMaster? Even as an adult I love looking at the slides. My grandma has hundreds of them.

One of my favorite stories ever

The Fisher Price record player. I had to restrain myself from packing this thing up and taking it home with me. This thing has lasted at least thirty years through several grand kids and it's still going strong. They really don't make toys like they used to.

My next quest is to find some of these and other toys like the Fisher Price Little People sets on eBay. I've never done eBay so any shopping and bidding tips would be much appreciated!

We have done e-bay stuff. Just make sure that the person that is selling the items has high ratings and positive feed back. Also its nice to buy things that say "Buy Now" then you don't have to deal with the bidding and what not. But sometimes its fun to bid on things though. As far as shipping, sometimes its not too much. I bought Ava a Where's Waldo collectors item and the shipping was like $2.00 which I didn't think was bad. The item was used but was still in real good shape. Check to see if some of the items offer "Free Shipping" because you can never go wrong there! I love all of those old school toys! Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions!!

That is so awesome. I love old stuff. When I am looking at books to get Caleb, I notice all the new books of the new Disney characters etc, and I just can't bring myself to get those. I love the old stuff. I love Dr. Suess. Shel Silverstein is awesome. He actually wrote some adult stuff that is pretty inappropriate about addiction, but I thought it was awesome. We would use it as a therapeutic reading for the clients. The poem is called "The Perfect High". It's pretty powerful. As for old toys, I love that record player. Old toys are awesome. I too adore little people. Caleb loves them. I have a bunch. I got a bunch off of craigslist. Not sure how popular craigslist is in Idaho, but it's cheaper than ebay. Ebay charges quite a bit for shipping because usually the sets are big. Are you wanting the old school little people or the new ones? I love that Ellie loves to read. It's something I think is so important. While I'm not anti-tv, I think it's so vital to get kids excited about books. My pediatrician is turbo about reading to your kids. She said the three things she thinks are key to raising a happy healthy kid is to 1. Breastfeed, 2. Not smoke, and 3. Read to your kids. I can't wait to read chapter books to Caleb. I just finished "where the red fern grows" and OH MY GOSH...LOVE! I want to read all the classics. I just think books aren't the same anymore, and all those old school kids books we were raised on teach such important lessons. Anyway, I could go on and on. We don't have a ton of books just yet, but we are slowly building Caleb's library. I really wish my parents kept the books from when we were little.

o my gosh it was like looking back at my toys when I read your blog. I totally found "But no Elephants" at a thrift shop. I would highly reccomend thrift shops for those amazing books. I would also reccomend garage sales. I find all the cool old toys when I do that. Thanks for the blast from the past!!!

I always remember the kitchen set - complete with cold cereal for us to cook - your mom used to always let me and Mindi play with it when we came to visit and sleep on the "magic bed". I always loved sleepovers at Aunt Marti's!

I remember a lot of those! The last picture where Piper is reading a book... the "Clue" game in the background brought back memories for me. We had that. How fun!!!
