Extreme Makeover

Lots of you know we bought a house in August. What sold me on this house was the floor plan and the awesome neighborhood. We have the greatest neighbors anyone could ask for. My girls have already been adopted by a new set of grandparents next door. They are amazing people. The house is one of those that people walk into and say that it has good bones which is code for an ugly but fixable house. So we worked on it 6 days a week for 2 1/2 months to get it ready for us to move in. It was a great house to begin with but it just wasn't our style so luckily all we had to do were mostly cosmetic changes like paint and flooring. The walls were mauve and pink in the living room, floral carpet in the dining room, family room, and master bed and bath, turquoise carpet in one bedroom, orange carpet with cat wallpaper in another bedroom, and outdated lighting everywhere. We did all the demo ourselves and the whole remodel except lay the carpet.

This is what we have done so far:
Painted the whole interior
Replaced most of the lighting (we're still looking for a good deal on two ceiling fans)
Chipped out the rock entryway & rebuilt part of the floor
Replaced carpet in bedrooms & family room
Laminate flooring everywhere else except the bathrooms
Trimmed out & painted kitchen cabinets with tons of help from my awesome dad
Formica kitchen counter tops
Butcher block counter top surrounding the stove
New kitchen sink and faucet
Replaced all cabinet hardware
New trim everywhere except the bedrooms & bathrooms
Installed GFI outlets in the bathrooms and kitchen

There is still plenty to do but since moving in we haven't done a thing. I haven't really even decorated yet and our living room is filled with $60 worth of thrift store and estate sale furniture. The bathrooms need remodeled but that will be a project for another year. One is covered in pink and black tile and the other is done in purple and black tile. But they are functional for now so we can live with it. Someday we would like to do a subway tile backsplash in the kitchen. We also need to touch up the walls and the trim but I think we're burned out for now. Maybe I'll have the energy to do it after the holidays. And someday we'll do something with the fireplaces and the old drafty windows. After doing the kitchen cabinets I can tell you right now I'll never paint cabinets again. It took forever to clean, de-gloss, wood fill, prime, and paint them. I decided to use oil based paint for a more durable finish but it's a pain to work with. They turned out great though.
One of my favorite details of the house is the butcher block counter top my dad built around our stove. I came up with the idea but he made it awesome by using both maple and black walnut to make stripes. It is  beautiful. He made two matching cutting boards for me too and I get more compliments on the counter top and cutting boards than anything else in the house.
There is no way we could have done all of this without the help of our amazing families. I don't know how we lucked out but we have the best families ever. They all spent hours and hours with us doing anything we asked them to and all we had to do was feed them pizza and Pepsi and Mountain Dew :)

Oh I know the work that goes into painting cabinets. SUCH A PAIN. They turned out PERFECT! Love the laminate flooring you used! What a fun (and HARD) project. But you will appreciate your house so much more because you were the one to do it! Loved this!

I love it all Monica, way to go and endure to the end. Or at least endure until you couldn't stand anymore :) I love how you tried to keep the style of the house instead of completely changing it....It flows wonderfully, and I love your furniture!!! Where did you find that yellow couch? It is all so you!!! Nice work, I can't wait to see the bathrooms.
